16TH CENTURY MS RELATING TO SILVER

(MEXICO.) Manuscript, recording payments of taxes on silver production in Fresnillo and Mazapil. Approximately 240 leaves, written on both sides. 4to, contemporary wallet-style limp vellum, a bit stained; some soiling and very minor dampstaining but generally clean. Mexico, 1576-90

  • Notes: a unique manuscript written at the height of 16th-century silver mining in colonial mexico. Silver was discovered in Fresnillo and Mazapil in the 1560s. The remote area, however was prone to attack by Chichimeca Indians, affecting the productivity of these mines.
