19th-century needlework piece depicting a stage scene,

with two well-dressed black couples (probably vaudevillians) on stage, 19x21 1/2 inches; multi-colored silk thread on color-stamped cotton; some thread damage, edges of stitching showing. Np, circa 1880-90

  • Notes: An unusual piece of needlework, probably a pillow cover. The distinctly African-American figures are not depicted in the stereotypical manner so common at the time. While age has worn away much of the silk thread from the front, the reverse shows a great deal of the original needlework.
