  • Notes: inscribed on the front free endpaper by Samuel Johnson (1696-1772), Anglican minister in colonial Connecticut and first president of King's College in New York: "Samuelis Johnsoni Liber ex Don. Revdi. D. G. Berkeley... An. D. 1730."
    exceptional association copy, linking the Anglo-Irish idealist philosopher George Berkeley (1685-1753) with Johnson, his leading American disciple. The two became acquainted during Berkeley's 1728-31 stay in Newport, Rhode Island.
    With signature dated 1753 and Chippendale-style armorial bookplate of Johnson's son William Samuel Johnson (1727-1819), jurist, first president of Columbia (after being renamed from King's) College, and signer of the Constitution. Allen, American Book-Plates 434.
