A LOW DEAD BEAT DE LAND, THEODORE L. Typed Letter Signed, to John Petrie, complaining of a man named Lyons and stating that he will be sending out a box of tricks soon. One page, 4to; on De Land business letterhead. Philadelphia, 27 December 1913

  • Notes: De Land was a publisher and producer of tricks. His letters are rarely seen, especially one with such amusing content. This letter is sent to John Petrie of Petrie and Lewis, famous trick manufacturers. In it he complains of a man named Lyons, "He is a low dead beat and owes me about $9.00... He is an ignorant man with no social training and absolutely out of place amongst gentlemen. I had a fine machine made by Brown & Sharp. This ignorant fool phoned a firm of almost similar name in this city and wanted them to make him one also. They make soap I think and gave him the laugh. You can look for some fun with this pup."
