A MONUMENTAL VICTORIAN PRINTING [DRUMMOND, HENRY.] Histories of Noble British Families, with Biographical Notices of the Most Distinguished
A MONUMENTAL VICTORIAN PRINTING [DRUMMOND, HENRY.] Histories of Noble British Families, with Biographical Notices of the Most Distinguished Individuals in Each. 41 plain and 41 richly hand-colored plates; numerous illustrations and vignettes. 2 volumes. Folio, gilt-lettered 1/2 burgundy morocco by Haday, extremities scuffed with some loss of leather; scattered foxing, heaviest in Volume 2, one leaf with 2-inch clean marginal tear; armorial bookplates of Edward Penton. London: William Pickering, 1846
- Notes: first edition, with the scarce extra plate depicting the burial monument of Sir George Bruce, found in only a few copies. Whittingham's skill as a printer is evident in his combining text, genealogical tables and trees with woodcut views, coats-of-arms, and crests. Most plates show skillful reproductions of famous portraits, and many display the interiors and exteriors of the great English and Scottish homes. One of the scarcest and most handsome of Pickering's publications and one of a very small number printed. Keynes 74.
