218A

A.M. CASSANDRE PARIS. 1935.

39 1/4x24 inches. Draeger, Paris.
Condition B: repaired tears and creases in image and margins; restored losses and pinholes at corners. Japan.
Although produced in the same year as his fabled Normandie poster, this image is more of an indication of the direction Cassandre's work would take once he moved to America in 1936. It is done in a "charming, dreamy" symbolic style based on Surrealism, and, indeed, elements of Magritte can be seen, and is a "foreglimpse of Cassandre's later stage designs" (Mouron p. 71). Mouron 53.
