  • Provenance: Notes:
Siskind's series "Tabernacle City" depicted the vernacular architecture of Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard. While this image, and much of his early work, is largely documentarian, Siskind's move toward abstraction during this period led to his departure from the Photo League in New York, where he had developed the collaborative Feature Group, dedicated to creating photo essays documenting city life. As he moved away from this visual idiom toward one more interior and abstract, Siskind would find alignment with artists such as Mark Rothko and Franz Kline, exhibiting at the Charles Egan Gallery in New York, the preeminent space for the abstract expressionist painters. Siskind's interest in form and surface represented a more personal, moving visual language, one filled with nuance, texture, and expressive detail.
