ABBOTT, BERENICE (1898-1991) Portrait of James Joyce.

ABBOTT, BERENICE (1898-1991)
Portrait of James Joyce. Silver print, 10x8 inches (25.4x20.3 cm.), with Abbott's Abbott, Maine hand stamp on verso. Circa 1926; printed 1950s

  • Notes: A scarce portrait of Joyce, who was photographed by Abbott in Paris. Abbott had been Man Ray's photo assistant from 1923-25, and opened her own portrait studio in 1926, at 44 Rue du Bac. She returned to New York in 1929.

A typewritten letter accompanying the photograph, which is addressed to Mr. Victor LaPari, and dated March 7, 1984 reads: "Abbott took the photograph originally in the 1920's. Subsequently, she made a few new prints in the late 1950's."
