ABBOTT, BERENICE (1898-1991)
Portrait of Eugène Atget. Silver print, 13 1/2x10 inches (34.3x25.4 cm.), with Abbott's signature and edition notation "4 2/60," in pencil, on mount recto; and her's and the publisher's hand stamp on mount verso. 1927; printed 1981
- Notes: In 1927, a young portrait photographer named Berenice Abbott, who was then in the employ of Man Ray, photographed the aged Atget, whose studio was near Man Ray's on the Rue de Campagne, in Paris. Deeply inspired by his oeuvre, which served as the prototype for her remarkable chronicle of New York City, changing new york (New York, 1939), she edited a book of his photographs, the world of atget (New York, 1964), published 2 portfolios from his negatives (see lot 100), and made numerous modern prints. The extensive Abbott-Levy Collection of Atget photographs is in the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
