(ABOLITION.) Abraham Lincoln. Carte-de-visite rendering of the Emancipation Proclamation. Albumen photograph, 2½ x 2 inches, on original photographer's mount with printed caption; minimal wear. Syracuse, NY: Ames' National Business College, 1866

  • Notes: The Emancipation Proclamation is illustrated with portraits of Lincoln, his cabinet, and Generals Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, and Thomas. The portraits and calligraphy were by D.T. Ames, and the photographer was F.E. Marble. We can find only two other similar examples, at the Indiana Historical Society and Lincoln Financial Foundation, although both credit a Mrs. Glover as the photographer. No others traced at auction; the original artwork by Ames was sold at a Charles Hamilton auction in 1981.
