half-length portrait [by Roderick M. Cole?], oval albumen print showing him in ¾ view. Inscribed on the mount at lower right. Affixed to lower edge of mount is slip of paper with printed description: "Picture was presented by President Lincoln to Mr. Richard Edwards, of St. Louis, some three weeks previous to his leaving Springfield for Washington in 1861, and by Mr. Edwards to the Presbyterian department of the North Western Sanitary Fair. The signature is Mr. Lincoln's own autograph." 7¼x5¼ inches (image), 8¼x7 inches overall; mounted to larger board, short closed tear at upper edge of mount affecting photograph (not affecting portrait), faint scattered foxing and soiling overall; matted and framed.

    Richard Edwards (1822-1908) was a Welsh-American educator and administrator who served as president of the Illinois State Normal University 1862-76, later becoming president of Blackburn College in Carlinville, IL, 1891-93.

    The United States Sanitary Commission provided relief to sick and wounded Union soldiers as well as Confederate prisoners of war. The Commission collected donations of food, supplies, and cash, as well as paintings, statuary, furniture, autographs, and other collectibles, some to be sold at Sanitary Fairs and others on temporary loan to be displayed in a Fair's public exhibition.
