(ABRAHAM LINCOLN.) Assassination issue of the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, also featuring a celebration of the war's end.

(ABRAHAM LINCOLN.) Assassination issue of the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, also featuring a celebration of the war's end. 4 pages, 28 x 21¾ inches, on one folding sheet; uncut, folds, minor wear and foxing. Cincinnati, OH, 15 April 1865

  • Notes: The assassination is announced as part of a 29-line stacked headline on the third page: "Assassination of the President. He is Shot in the Theater. Escape of the Murderer. . ." The accompanying story includes three special dispatches which were exclusive to the Gazette, ending at 1:15 a.m.: "The President is slowly dying. The brain is oozing through the ball hole in his forehead. He is, of course, insensible. There is an occasional lifting of his hand, and heavy stertoros breathing, that's all."

The front page was obviously composed before the assassination news was received. It features a 5-column article on the city's "Carnival of Patriotism" to celebrate the fall of Richmond and Lee's surrender, anchored by a large cut of an eagle: "The Disgrace and Triumph of the American Flag. Patriotism of the People, the Strength of the Nation. Celebration of Our National Victories."
