ABRAHAM WALKOWITZ Isadora Duncan Dancing in a Red Dress.

ABRAHAM WALKOWITZ
Isadora Duncan Dancing in a Red Dress.

Watercolor and pen and ink on cream laid paper, 1909. 250x200 mm; 10x8 inches. Signed and dated in black ink, lower right recto. Ex-collection Zabriskie Gallery, New York, with the label on the frame back.

Walkowitz's (1878-1965) fascination with American dancer Isadora Duncan (1877-1927) is manifest in the many hundreds, if not thousands, of drawings he made of her dancing. At the end of his career, the artist remarked, "She Duncan had no laws. She did not dance according to the rules. She created. Her body was music."
