Abram Games 1914-1996 B.O.A.C. Stratocruiser Speed Bird I Fly To Britain By B.O.A.C. 1949 30 x 19.625 inches. Condition B+: tears and wrinkles at edges; pinholes in corners. Paper. Competition between the different airlines in Great Britain was fierce in the post-war period, and so, quite understandably, the airline companies hired thebest graphic designers in the field, such as Henrion, Ashley, and, ofcourse, Abram Games, to help them advertise. At the time when Games was creating these posters for B.O.A.C., the trend among these artists was not to illustrate the actual airplanes as had been the style in the thirties but instead to advertise the advantages of flying, such as saved travel time. In order to capture these concepts the designers created beautiful, symbolic and surrealistically- inspired images that quite poetically captured the abstract concepts they were advertising. A folding map shows on one side the U.S., on the other Britain, with an ocean in between them. Over artistically- drawn clouds, an arrow going both ways acts to connect them, all the while symbolically portraying how travel by airplane shortens distances.
