  • Notes:
Adam Clark Vroman is best known for his portraits of Native Americans. He collaborated frequently with the Bureau of American Ethnology, a research unit of the Smithsonian Institution, making a series of eight trips to Arizona and New Mexico between 1895 and 1904, photographing the Hopi, Zuni, and Navajo peoples. His images bridge the ethnographic traditions of the 19th century with the so-called "objective" vision of the 20th, using modern techniques and materials when making images of living tribes and traditions, rather than viewing the culture as "vanishing." These modern, detail-rich views, in which he himself also appears frequently, are both sensitive and masterful.
