Ansel Adams''s affinity for the technical and theoretical aspects of photography, from exposure through the developing process, have made him a legend in photographic history and are strikingly evident in this dramatic image of the Sierra Nevada, Yosemite Valley. The jagged relief of the mountains is softly modulated by the dark hills below. Indeed, the fine filaments of the branches in the foreground are as clear and detailed as the mountains high above them. An image of the sublime, it displays the hallmarks that have made Adams one of the most recognized American landscape photographers of the twentieth century.
