ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. Argument of John Quincy Adams before the Supreme Court of the United States, in the Case of the Appellants vs Cinque and Others, Africans * Argument of Roger Baldwin . . . in the Case of the Appellants vs Cinque, and Others, Africans. Bound together in quarter red morocco backed marbled paper-covered boards; spine gilt extra with four raised bands, title and fancy gilt tools in four compartments; some light foxing throughout; paper lightly and evenly toned. New York: S.W. Benedict, 1841

  • Notes: The arguments of John Quincy Adams and Roger Baldwin were bolstered by the efforts of the Committee set up by Lewis Tappan which had sought them out in the first place. Adams stated: "The moment you come to the Declaration of Independence, that every man has a right to life and liberty, an inalienable right, this case is decided. I ask nothing more in behalf of these unfortunate men than this Declaration." Baldwin maintained the earlier decision of the lower court, that the Mende captives were not slaves to begin with and that the United States could not defend the claims of a foreign government on behalf of slavers.
