[AFFICHES CHARLES VERNEAU / LA RUE.] 1896.

Charles Verneau, Paris.
91x118 inches.

  • Notes: La Rue was an ambitious project launched by Charles Verneau to propagate art to the masses while serving his corporate image. It is one of the largest posters produced in the fin-de-siecle era and, from an artistic point of view, by far the best. All of the characters Steinlen cherished are represented here. A little girl (his daughter Colette) wearing a red dress, with her nanny, a young laundress, workmen and members of the bourgeoisie in a perfectly balanced composition. The large format seems to enhance Steinlen's art of caricature. A sister panel called "The Boulevard" was planned in conjunction with this work (Bargiel-Zagrodski no. 78),- but it was never printed. This is the only known copy of La Rue to surface before lettering. Maitres 1900 cover, Color Revolution cover.
  • Condition: Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins; restoration along seams. 6 sheets.
