(AFRICA.) Crummell, Alexander. The Relations and Duties of Free Colored Men in America to Africa. A Letter to Charles B. Dunbar 54 pages. 8vo, original printed wrappers, sewn. EXCEPTIONAL COPY. Hartford: Case, Lockwood, 1861 E500/750 FIRST EDITION. Crummell, missionary, author, clergyman and teacher (1819-98), was born free in New York City. On the advice of his rector, Peter Williams, he applied for admission to General Theological Seminary in New York. Following his ordination, he studied at Cambridge, England. After a brief visit to the U.S., Crummell went to Liberia, devoting himself to the education, not merely "Christianization," of the Africans. In 1866 racial strife between the ruling mulatto group and the "pure" blacks, led by President Roye, sent Crummell back to the U.S., where he remained. Schomburg Collection, microfilm copy only; Blockson Collection 3890. [SEE ILLUSTRATION]
