(AFRICA.) Park, Mungo. Travels in the Interior Districts of Africa... in the Years 1795, 1796, and 1797. Portrait frontispiece, large folding map, smaller map and all plates. 4to, contemporary calf, rebacked at an early date, boards rubbed, but quite sound. London: W. Bulmer for the Author, 1799

  • Notes: second edition of one of the best-known early travels to Africa. Park was employed by the African Association to explore the course of the Niger River. He reached Gambia in June of 1795 and, accompanied by two servants, he made for the unknown interior, crossing the Senegal basin and through the semi-desert region of Kaarta. At one point he was captured by Arabs and detained for four months during which time he was beaten and humiliated. He escaped in July of 1796 and armed with nothing more than his pocket compass reached the Niger at Segu, being the first European to set eyes on it. He followed the stream for some 300 miles, but fell ill and could go no farther. He was cared for by a native for four months and finally returned to England in 1797. Printing and the Mind of Man, 253 "Until the publication of Park's book, hardly anything was known of the interior of Africa, apart from the north-east region and coastal areas."
