Notes: first edition. Peterson, the son of slaves, was apprenticed early in life as a servant and later worked as a steward on a Delaware river steamboat. He was able to save enough money to purchase his mother''s freedom. Peterson''s account of his trip to Africa and meetings with ex-patriot Americans forms about half of this narrative.
