Adams, Robert. The Narrative of Robert Adams, who was Wrecked on the Western Coast of Africa, in the Year 1810, was Detained Three Years in Slavery, [etc.] Engraved folding map. 4to, contemporary calf gilt, rebacked at an early date with morocco, generally worn overall. London, 1816 bound with--Riley, James. Loss of the American Brig Commerce. Folding map, with 2-inch tear extending from gutter into image. London, 1817. The first narrative was authored by a Black sailor who shipped out of Hudson, NY bound for Gibraltar. After delivering their cargo they continued on to the coast of Africa to trade. The ship was caught in adverse currents and was wrecked on the coast of Senegal. The crew survived but were made slaves by the Arab inhabitants. The Captain and mate were killed. Adams was ransomed by the British consul at Mogadore. The second narrative recounts a similar story.
