AL MACY Group of 22 photographs of New York City in the 1950s including views of the El, Coney Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, the great reception hall at Grand Central Terminal, Washington Square Park the Manhattan skyline at night, the Paramount Theater, chess players in the park, the Woolworth Building, a tugboat at a west side pier, and more. Silver prints, 1950-55; printed 1950s-60s. 19 are approximately 7.75 x 9.75in or the reverse, 3 are approximately 6.75 x4.75in, most with printing notations, in pencil, and a handstamp on verso. E1,000/1,500 Al Macy (1899-1970), a native New Yorker and long time purchasing agent for the Continental Can Company, first picked uphis camera in 1940. He began his most accomplished body of work a decade later, capturing a vivid pictorial history of mid-century New York.
