Albert Guillaume

1873-1942

Palais de Glace / Champs - Élysées. Circa 1896.

Condition B+ / A-: replaced loss in upper right corner; minor abrasions and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds. Matted and framed.

A "Grand Bourgeois," Guillaume began his career working as a caricaturist for many magazines and soon became a prolific poster designer. He transferred his humoristic-realism to the larger format of posters, using a gallery of characters (bourgeois, officers, aristocrats and servants) to advertise drinks and grocery goods. These caricature characters, whilst being stylistic, tended to lack style and class. Guillaume however, had another artistic side, one that reflected his command of light tones and elegance. Both in this poster and in his work for La Scala one can see the talented, delicate painter he could be when he represented the elegant Parisian life. Two young women, arm in arm, are gently skating in the warm atmosphere of this trendy, popular and heavily advertised skating rink on the Champs-Élysées. Guillaume even creates his own original typography! Several variations of this poster exist with the names of different skating rinks printed across the bottom.

This is the larger format. Gold 125.
45x35½ inches, 114¼x90¼ cm. Ch. Wall & Cie., Paris.
