Alexander Dumas (1802-1870) Emma Hardy, translator. (fl. ca. 1850)

The Chateau d'If.

Belfast: Simms & M'Intyre; London: W.S. Orr & Co., 1846.
First English edition of the first part of The Count of Monte Cristo; published as part of the Parlour Novelist series, with single leaf of publisher's ads bound after the text; bound in contemporary half green calf with gilt-tooled spine and marbled paper boards; rare at auction; 6 1/4 x 3 3/4 in.

At time of cataloguing, we are unable to find exact dates for the translator, however, a notice in The Irish Book Lover sheds some light. An English translation of The Commander of Malta by Aldebert Doisy, "not being good, James McIntyre suggested to a highly accomplished young lady, a native of Belfast--Miss Emma Hardy--to translate The Chateau D'If, being part I of the great novel of Monte Cristo. This appeared in 1849 I think, perhaps earlier [i.e., 1846], and was a vast success, selling more than any other of the series. The second part, Joseph Balsamo, followed in about a year, and again after an interval, The Count of Monte Cristo, which ultimately gave the name to the very greatest of modern romances." (Quoted from The Irish Book Lover, vol. II, No. 9, April 1911.)
