Supporting the American fish industry

Alexander Hamilton

Letter Signed, "AHamilton," as Treasury Secretary, to Collector William Webb,

reporting an increase in allowances made to domestic fishermen, and noting that the absence of the Comptroller [Oliver Wolcott, Jr.] compels him to send the letter. 1 page, 4to, with integral address leaf, with Treasury Register Joseph Nourse's franking signature; minor chipping along right edge, folds

[Philadelphia], 27 May 1794.

  • Notes: ". . . I have to inform you that the addition of 20 P[er]C[en]t made to the allowances to Fishing Vessels by the Act of May 2 1792 is to extend as well to the limitation of one Hundred and Seventy Dollars contained in the Act of the 16th of February preceding as to the specific rates of allowance, that is to say the limitation is now Two Hundred and four Dollars instead of one Hundred and Seventy Dollars.
"A temporary absence of the Comptroller occasions the direct communication of the above opinion from this Office."
