ALEXANDER HESLER (1823-1895)/GEORGE B. AYRES (1829-1905) Portrait of Abraham Lincoln. June 3, 1860; printed circa 1900s.

ALEXANDER HESLER (1823-1895)/GEORGE B. AYRES (1829-1905)
Portrait of Abraham Lincoln. June 3, 1860; printed circa 1900s. Toned silver print, the image measuring 13¼x10¼ inches (33.7x26 cm.), flush mounted, with two "Nathaniel E. Stein Collection" labels on mount verso, one with an inscription in ink; in a period frame.

The typed inscription on the first label reads as follow: "A direct enlargement from the famous Hessler glass negative of 1860 now in the possession of King Hostick of Chicago. The photograph was expressly made for the Lincoln presidential campaign."

  • Condition: This portrait of Abraham Lincoln, June 3, 1860; printed circa 1900s, is overall in good to very good condition and displays rich strong tones and very fine details.

The surface shows a series of rubs and impressions, which are mostly located in the background and outside the central portrait, and more specifically along the right edge of the image area. The upper left corner also shows a circular inconsistency, as if the emulsion is stuck to the glass. These surface inconsistencies don't impact the sitter's depiction and remain not overly distracting.

The photograph is enclosed in a period frame and hasn't been removed from the frame for the purpose of the report. The print is flush mounted, with two "Nathaniel E. Stein Collection" labels on mount verso, one with an inscription in ink.

The typed inscription on the first label reads as follow: "A direct enlargement from the famous Hessler glass negative of 1860 now in the possession of King Hostick of Chicago. The photograph was expressly made for the Lincoln presidential campaign."

A handsome portrait in which Lincoln is bathed in studio light.
