The Iliad of Homer.

London: Printed by W. Bowyer for Bernard Lintott, 1715-1720.
First edition, six small folio volumes bound as five (vols. V and VI bound together); volume one with engraved bust of Homer bound as frontispiece; ex libris Hannah Vincent, with her signature on the title pages of the first five volumes; volume I with 2 full-page engravings and one folding engraved map; the set bound in very nice uniform full contemporary English paneled calf with the inclusion of a remarkable receipt for the binding work made out by the original binder to "The Reverend Mr. Vincent," and dated 1721; the binder notes "Sir, I have hear [sic] sent you the popes homer, & I am your humble servant T. Hurst" [or perhaps Hunt], other binding work is included on the receipt and two book sales, along with prices; Vincent also purchased "Davies Book for ye Aged; and Dr. Smaldridge's Speech," binding 3 books in large octavo cost 3 shillings, binding 2 books in 12mo cost 1 shilling and 2 pence; the binding for all six volumes of Pope cost 2 pounds and 10 shillings in 1721; the final note from the binder is on the title of the fifth volume, where he has written "both 2" a reference to the cost-saving move of binding the final two volumes as one; (front board of first volume detached; joints a bit cracked; endcaps bumped with loss); ex libris Robert Williams with bookplates; 11 1/2 x 7 1/2 in.

The Vincent's of the receipt and ownership inscription may be Reverend William Vincent (1686-1740), Rector of All Saints Church, Ratcliffe Culey in Sheep Magna, Leicestershire and either his wife Hannah Reynolds Vincent (1712-1772) or daughter Hannah Vincent (1734-1801).
