ALEXANDRE LOUIS ROBERT MILLIN DU PERREUX
(Paris 1764-1843 Paris)
La Grotte Saint-Michel d'Eau Douce, près de Marseille.

Pen and ink and wash on cream laid paper. 239x308 mm; 9 1/2x12 1/4 inches. Annotated in ink, lower left recto.

Du Perreux trained with Jean-François Huet and Henri de Valenciennes. As a landscape and topographical artist, he traveled to Switzerland, Italy and Spain, and then spent seven years in the Pyrenees. He exhibited at the Salon de Paris from 1793 to 1822.

Du Perreux inherited, along with his brother, land and a castle (since demolished) in Le Perreux-sur-Marne, now part of the eastern suburbs of Paris, from his father, Robert Millin, the financier and director of the royal lottery of King Louis XVI, following the father's death at the guillotine in 1794. The brothers were ultimately forced to sell the estate during the Republic, but Du Perreux nonetheless had a successful career. He was highly appreciated by the Empress Josephine and protected by the Bourbons during the restoration.
