  • Notes:
Born in Grand Haven, Michigan, Alfred Heber Hutty exhibited his paintings and etchings with the Scarab Club and the Detroit Institute of Arts on several occasions, showing a painting entitled Early Snow in the winter of 1921. He spent his early career in the Midwest as a stained glass window designer in Kansas City and Saint Louis before moving to New York to work at the Tiffany Glass Studios. In 1907-08, Hutty settled in Woodstock, New York to study with landscape painter Birge Harrison, and he was an early member, alongside George Bellows, of the burgeoning art colony there. Early Snow is likely a depiction of Woodstock during the winter months. In 1919, after serving as a marine camouflage artist in World War I, Hutty settled in Charleston, South Carolina. He would divide his time between Charleston and Woodstock for the rest of his life. Hutty became a fixture in the Charleston art community; he became the director of the Carolina Art Association in the 1920s and established the Charleston Etchers Club.

The Foster Brothers were one of the most respected framing establishments in Boston. The business was formed in 1875 by John Roy Foster and Stephen Bartlett Foster. Their frames are identifiable by their rich layered gilding and combination of traditional elements.
