Towards the end of Alfred Stieglitz's student days in Europe, he made this exposure near Vienna, June 1890. Sarah Greenough, the curator of photography for the National Gallery of Art, published in Volume 1 of Alfred Stieglitz: The Key Set three variant prints of this image (No. 62, 63, and 64). The first, a platinum print exhibited in 1891 and widely reproduced in magazines and books of the period, shows a slightly wider view, with foliage on the left side and along the horizon line. The next print, also a platinum, was printed 1895-96, and is a bit darker with higher contrast and a greater amount of foliage at the side and horizon. The third print is a silver gelatin from 1920-1930s, also with a variant cropping.

  • Condition: Alfred Stieglitz's beautiful platinum print "Weary" (circa 1890; printed before 1898) is in excellent condition. The print is exceptionally dimensional and rich, with textural detail throughout.

The surface of the print is clean, bright, and neat. The print showcases a range of tones and crisp detail. With close inspection, we can find a light spec at the top left edge of the image area, but under magnification this appears to be tiny paper fibers. Other tiny specs visible with close examination all appear to be in the negative, and correspond to the other known prints of this image (in the National Gallery of Art).

The print is boldly signed and dated ("'98") by Stieglitz at the left edge of the mount. What appears to be Stieglitz's initials can be found in pencil in the lower right corner of the image area (visible in our catalogue image).

The print is mounted to gray art paper. This mount is neatly hinged to the undermat, and at the top edge there is a band of slightly mottled fading, perhaps related to a prior presentation. This is minor. There are two caricatures in pencil in an unknown hand on the reverse of the mount, as well as a few faint stray soiling marks (not impacting recto).

According to the National Gallery, Stieglitz submitted this image to The Amateur Photographer's "Travelling Studentship Competition" as Weary. The journal notes, "all the negatives are un-retouched, and no cloud negatives are used. They have been taken with a Steinheil Aplanat. The plates used include Obernetter, Eosine, Schlenssn, Perulz (eosine), and Lumière. The developers have been pyro and soda and iron, and the whole of the prints have been produced in platinotype" (see The Amateur Photographer 12 [18 July 1890], 41).
