ALFREDO MÜLLER (1869-1940)

[TRAIN CROSSING.] 1903.

22 1/2x51 inches, 57 1/4x129 1/2 cm.
Condition B-: toned throughout; darkened along vertical lines, corresponding with the original wood panel backing; trimmed at sides. Mounted on thin board. Framed.

Alfredo Müller was a Swiss painter and printmaker born in Livorno, Italy. Eventually emigrating to Paris, he became acquainted with the Impressionists, and later developed his own color etching technique. His printed works were included in publications such as Le Courrier Francaise and Cocorico. This is the rarest of the six "Müller Friezes" he created as decorative panels or wallpapers, depicting a charming image of a Quadricycle from the early years of automobiles. The concept of the intrusion of modern locomotion into the countryside is similar to Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen's poster Cycles Comiot, in which geese scatter before an early motorized bicycle.
