  • Notes: first edition, first issue. Mounted to front endpaper is a note inscribed from Horatio Alger Jr. to Arthur Burks, dated December 25, 1891. Burks was a young friend of Alger whose name was used as a character in Chester Rand. He also served as a pallbearer at Alger's funeral in 1899. Gardner 61.
