ALHAMBRA / CARMEN. Two posters. Circa 1900. Each approximately 29.75x 1 9.875in. J. Wiener Ltd., London. Condition varies, generally A-: light horizontal and vertical folds. One of the premier locales to see the ballet in early twentieth-century London, the Alhambra Theater produced the ballet Carmen at least three times, in 1897, 1903, and 1912. These two posters are adaptations of theatrical photographs taken of unnamed dancers in Spanish garb. The first image shows the figure of Carmen, wearing a pink ruffled skirt and a yellow shawl, with a rose clenched between her teeth; the second poster features the character of the toreador in a white suit with green piping. Interestingly, the role of the toreador is also played by a female dancer, as male classical dancers were considered effete and therefore out of fashion in the early 1900s.
