  • Condition: Alice Austen's engaging portfolio entitled "Street Types of New York" is in overall very good to excellent condition. The prints are rich and detailed, with warm sepia tones and white highlights. The image areas are overall bright, neat, and clean, and showcase Austen's skilled street photography.

Just one of the prints evidences a tiny spot of residue ("Pretzel Vender and Emigrant, South Ferry," within the man's hat). Otherwise the image areas and the narrow margins are bright, neat, and clean, without apparent flaw.

The paper mounts are overall very good, but many evidence faint evidence of handling, including a soft diagonal crease at the lower left corner. One has a small bump at the left edge. And two others have a very narrow band of foxing at the extreme top edge, not at all impacting the image.

With the small printed plate list. The cloth-covered boards folder shows light wear, including foxing on the front cover. A couple of the ties are perished.

A rare and important body of work by a female photographer who famously lived on Staten Island and documented the streets of late 19th-century New York.
