Alice B. Toklas (1877-1967) & Sir Francis Rose (1909-1979), illus.

The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book.

London: Michael Joseph, 1954.
First English edition, octavo; illustrated in black-and-white by Sir Francis Rose; bound in publisher's tan buckram stamped in green and gilt, pictorial endpapers, green top stain; with the unclipped illustrated dust jacket (jacket stained, soiled, somewhat worn, toning to front panels; faint marginal toning to contents, offsetting to a few leaves, scattered small stains at margins, creases, rare pencil annotations; cloth darkened at upper edge, corners bumped, faint staining to endcaps, cracked at gutter before final blank, offsetting to endpapers, ink ownership inscription); 9 x 5 ¾ in.

This first UK edition includes the famous recipe for "Haschich Fudge," contributed by artist Brion Gysin, on page 259. The recipe calls for ground nuts, dried fruits, and warm spices, but also a significant quantity of cannabis sativa. Toklas hilariously recommends serving this dish at a Ladies' Bridge Club or Daughters of the American Revolution chapter meeting, promising, "[e]uphoria and brilliant storms of laughter." The recipe was suppressed in the first American edition, although she notes that the sister strain, cannabis indica, can often be found in American city window boxes.
