  • Notes:
After her initial summer at Vinalhaven Press in 1993, Allison Saar returned the following summer to continue her projects, including Snake Man. This print was based on Saar's earlier sculpture Snake Charmer (1985), in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Snake Man, like much of Saar's work, draws upon elements from various traditions and myths of Celtic, Mexican, Haitian, African, Asian, and American societies. The texture on the man's body was printed from an old weathered piece of linoleum, and is punctuated by the bright reds of the snake, lips, and nipples printed in woodcut.
