ALLAN ROHAN CRITE (1910 - 2007)
Dudley Street Elevated Station.

Pen and ink on cream wove paper, 1938. 356x280 mm; 14x11 inches. Signed, initialed, titled and dated in ink, lower right.

Provenance: private collection.

Dudley Street Elevated Station is a scarce sketch from Crite's "Neighborhood Series" from the 1930s and 40s--his observations of the street activities of African-Americans in Boston's Roxbury and South End districts. Crite did many drawings on and around the many subways, trains and street cars of Boston. The Dudley Street terminal was a stop of the Boston Elevated Railway in the center of Roxbury and Boston's African-American community. It was the southern terminal of the Washington Street Elevated, and a transfer point from the subway to several buses.
