ALLAN ROHAN CRITE (1910 - 2007) Magazine and Bath.

ALLAN ROHAN CRITE (1910 - 2007)
Magazine and Bath.

Pencil and graphite on cream wove paper, 1934. 330x203 mm; 13x8 inches. Signed, initialed and dated "Aug. 1934" in pencil, lower right. Titled in pencil, lower margin.

Provenance: private collection, MD.

This intimate drawing is a beautiful example of Crite's excellent draughtmanship from an important year in his development as an artist. While a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and a member of the Boston Society of Independent Artists, Crite painted for the PWAP (Public Works of Art Project) briefly from February through April of 1934. By April, the Grace Horne Galleries on Newbury Street began showing his work--likely the first African-American artist to exhibit there.
