Silver print, the image measuring 197x299 mm; 7¾x11¾ inches, the sheet 279x356 mm; 11x14 inches, with Ginsberg's signature, unique title and lengthy inscription, and negative date in ink on recto, and Kaplan's signature and dates in pencil on verso.

The inscription reads as follows: "Neal Cassady age 29 young and handsome in North Beach used-car lot in front of "The Hearse" a black delivery truck, first auto for me & Peter Orlovsky. Bay-Area "Johnny Appleseed" of pot, Neil gambled madly at racetrack, worked decade as conductor southern Pacific R.R., Brakeman years before broke his ankle averting train crash, collected insurance, bought his family a house in Los Santos wrote sections of his First Third book, visited me & friends overnight on Gough Street, Polk Gulch & 1010 Montgomery Street that season, San Francisco 1955."

  • Condition: Allen Ginsberg's portrait "Neal Cassady, age 29, North Beach, San Francisco, CA." (1955; printed 1985 by Sid Kaplan) is lustrous and neat and overall in excellent condition.

    Under close inspection, the image area is clean and bright with no apparent flaws.

    The margins are overall clean and bright with some minor creases along the far top and bottom edges. With Ginsberg's signature, unique title, lengthy inscription, and negative date in ink on recto, as well as Kaplan's signature and dates in pencil on verso.
