(ALMANACS.) Collection of Boston-area almanacs covering 56 consecutive years. 56 volumes, all 12mo, disbound; various conditions but generally some wear and/or dampstaining, a few marginal inscriptions, with the 1782 lacking the title page. Not collated. Boston and elsewhere, [1740-95]

  • Notes: A consecutive run of almanacs by various publishers. All but two of the pre-revolutionary issues are "An Astronomical Diary, or an Almanack" by Nathaniel Ames. Nathanael Low's almanacs for 1765, 1772, 1775-77, 1781, 1784, 1786-87, and 1792 are included, as well as Daniel George's for 1778-80, the Farmer's Almanac issued by Robert B. Thomas for 1794 and 1796, and various others covering the post-revolutionary years. All are printed in Boston with the exception of three issued in Newburyport and a 1764 Ames almanac printed in Portsmouth, NH.
    Highlights include: 1766 Ames almanac with a woodcut of an eclipse by Paul Revere per Brigham, pages 198 and 200 (leaf defective but illustration untouched) * 1771 Ames almanac featuring the first appearance of Benjamin Franklin's satirical "Epitaph on Himself" * Low's 1775 almanac with a title-page engraving titled "The Virtuous Patriot at the Hour of Death" and Low's patriotic "Address to the Inhabitants of Boston" * Low's 1776 almanac featuring his long "Address to the Soldiers of the American Army" * and Low's 1777 almanac featuring a full-page map of the New York City area, "A View of the Present Seat of War, at and near New-York."
