ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939). [TWO SEASONS.] Circa 1897. 5x13 inches, 13x34 cm.

ALPHONSE MUCHA (1860-1939) [TWO SEASONS.] Circa 1897.
5 3/8x13 1/2 inches, 13 3/4x34 1/4 cm.
Condition B+: sharp vertical fold through image; discoloration in lower right corner. Matted and framed. Unexamined out of frame.
This is a previously unrecorded image for a project that was never realized. We know that it is a trial proof, because within the image we see both the artist''s name and the names of the month printed backwards. The figure on the left is in essence a reincarnation of Mucha''s depiction of Summer from his 1896 series of The Seasons, but his rendition here of Winter is a brand new one. Given its size, we can only assume that this was intended as a package design for some product. rare.
