ALPHONSE MUCHA [POSTCARDS.] Group of 5. 1898-1900.
Each approximately 3 1/2x5 1/2 inches. [F. Champenois, Paris.]
Condition varies, generally B+: most of the cards have been used.
The first ad offering Mucha's postcards for sale appeared in L'Estampe et l'Affiche early in 1899. From that point, until he left for America, Mucha's printer, Champenois, published seven different series of 12 postcards based on Mucha's designs. Much smaller, and substantially less expensive (a set was available for 1.25 francs), these postcards were very popular, even more so as, in those years, the mail was delivered five times a day, and people who often send postcards just to make an appointment for that same evening! Exceptionally printed, they have become highly collectible. Included in this group are Winter, Summer, Autumn, 1898, Summer, 1899, and August, 1900.
