Alson Skinner Clark is best known for his Impressionistic California landscapes, though his early œuvre is punctuated with paintings from his extensive travels taken during the early 1900s. Clark was born in Chicago and studied at the Art Students League in New York. He arrived in Paris to attend the Académie Julian in 1899, the beginning of an itinerant period for the young artist. After establishing a studio in Watertown, New York, Clark painted in Quebec, Spain, Prague, Dalmatia, and Panama, among other locations abroad. In April 1904, Clark left Paris and arrived in Genoa, Italy. He continued to tour Italy, visiting Pisa, Rome, and Naples and painting the cities' street scenes and landscapes.
