  • Notes: very scarce. no copy at auction in 25 years. Elijah Parish Lovejoy (1802-1837) was a minister, journalist, newspaper editor and ardent abolitionist. In May 1836, after pro-slavery elements in St. Louis destroyed his printing press--for the third time--Lovejoy left the city and moved across the river to Alton in the free state of Illinois. In 1837 he started printing the Alton Observer, a decidedly abolitionist paper. On 7 November, 1837, a pro-slavery lynch mob attacked the warehouse where Lovejoy kept his fourth printing press. Lovejoy and a small group of supporters exchanged gunfire with the mob, but Lovejoy was shot and died on the spot.
