ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966) Hermine Turner (Gertrude Käsebier's daughter). Circa 1903.

ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966)
Hermine Turner (Gertrude Käsebier's daughter). Circa 1903.
Gum bichromate over platinum print, the image measuring 8x6 inches (20.3x15.2 cm.), with Coburn's blind stamp monogram on print recto.

In 1902, the twenty-year-old Alvin Langdon Coburn opened his own studio in New York on Fifth Avenue. He had already been photographing for twelve years and had studied with his cousin, F. Holland Day. To further advance his portrait skills, he apprenticed to the eminent pictorialist and portraitist Gertrude Käsebier in her New York Studio. The records of his time with her have not been located, but this striking portrait of Käsebier's daughter, Hermine, has survived.

  • Condition: Coburn's portrait of Hermine Turner (Gertrude Käsebier's daughter), circa 1903, is in very good condition. Beautifully rendered on a slightly textured paper, the print displays soft details and tonal variation, as typical of the process.

Under close examination, the subject area is flawless, at the exception of a spec of retouching in the arm of the sitter. This is unobtrusive and noted for the purpose of a detailed report. But we can notice scattered inconsistencies on the extreme edges of the print (the print has no margins), including a few expertly done short creases repairs as well as a few chips with loss. There is one crease repair on the lower left edge, two on the upper edge, and one on the right edge. They are noticeable when examining the verso of the print.

The print also evidences a few chips with loss and the tips of the upper and lower corners are missing. These slight inconsistencies remain discreet and don't detract from the overall presentation and can be easily obscured by an overmat; the way the print is currently presented. Also, they do not impact Coburn's blind stamp monogram on print recto.

The verso is clean, with traces of the printing process on the extreme age-darkened edges.

    A rare and fine portrait.
