Holliday, 27 April 1945; thence by descent to a private collection, Indiana.
A portrait of the French poet Tristan Derème (1889-1941), whose given name was Philippe Derème. He participated with the group of poets called Les Fantaisistes in 1911; Modigliani drew portraits of other members including Blaise Cendrars. The drawing is a variant of another recorded by Osvaldo Patani. Modigliani often made several drawings of the same sitter in various poses.
