  • Notes: These three notes were addressed to Charles Ralph Foley (1878-1944) and his wife Sadie (Buchanan) Foley, ranchers who also operated a post office and general store in Kirby, MT, just south of the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation and not far from the Little Big Horn battle site. Among their customers were these three Northern Cheyenne veterans of Little Big Horn. Includes:
    His Bad Horse. Autograph Letter Signed to Charles R. Foley. Asks for two dollars of gasoline on credit. Explains that "I going get money on Monday, and going to get work horse." 5 1/2 x 4 inches, creased, faint grease stain. Kirby, 12 April 1925 * Old Braided Locks. Autograph Letter Signed to Sadie [Foley]. Returning a package. In full: "I was take this package with mistake this morning. I do not know who belonged it. I bringed back to you. I am Old Braided Socks." 3 x 5 inches, creased. Np, nd * Unsigned letter dictated on behalf of Old Man Grasshopper to Charles R. Foley. Offers a cow hide for sale and explains how he acquired it. "Old man said he haven't got nothing to eat, as his wife been sick for five months. He wish you would help him out." 9 x 5 1/2 inches, slight separations at folds. Kirby, MT, 30 March 1925. Provenance: through descent to the consignor, the granddaughter of Charles and Sadie Foley.
