  • Notes: Second edition. The scarce first edition of 1796 was largely written by John C. Chamberlin, but this second edition was extensively edited and revised by Mrs. Johnson-Hastings. "One of the most interesting of all the Indian captivities. She was captured at Charlestown, New Hampshire, in 1754, carried through what is now Vermont to Canada where she resided several years, and returned to New Hampshire by the way of England and New York"--Sabin 36327. The inscription reads "As a small compliment for many past favors, Mrs. Weld will please accept this trifle from her unknown friend Eliza Barnard. Barnston 22nd March 1810. Mrs. Johnson who was captivated was my grandmother, and the infant who was born in the woods was my mother. E.B." Ayer 120; Howes J153; McCorison, Vermont 926.
