(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Smith, Mary. An Affecting Narrative of the Captivity & Sufferings of Mrs. Mary Smith.

(AMERICAN INDIANS.) Smith, Mary. An Affecting Narrative of the Captivity & Sufferings of Mrs. Mary Smith. Hand-colored folding plate. 24 pages. 12mo, contemporary plain paper wrappers, spotted and worn; uncut, browning, marginal fraying, slight insect damage affecting first 3 leaves; inscribed "The property of Sarah Bagley" on final page. Providence: L. Scott, [1816?]

  • Notes: Mrs. Smith and her family were captured by Kickapoos west of the Natchez Trace. She watched as her husband and daughters were tortured and killed, soon escaped, and was recaptured after several days in the wilderness. The title page notes that she was saved by "the army of the brave General Jackson, late commanding at New-Orleans," a phrase which distinguishes this from other editions. Only one complete institutional copy of this edition has been traced. The 1999 Siebert sale featured the first complete copy at auction since 1921. Sabin 83539.
  • Condition: All items are offered for sale subject to Swann Galleries'' standard terms and conditions of sale, which are published in our catalogues.
